U.S. Department of Defense Birthday

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) was officially established on August 10, 1949, following an amendment to the National Security Act. While the federal government had overseen the U.S. Armed Forces since the nation's founding, the centralized Department of Defense under the Secretary of Defense and Joint Chiefs of Staff was not created until the late 1940s.

Agent Orange Awareness Day

Agent Orange Awareness Day, observed on 10 August, raises awareness about the harmful effects of the herbicide used by American forces in Vietnam to remove enemy ground cover. The Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes exposure to Agent Orange as a presumptive condition linked to certain medical issues.

Navajo Code Talkers Day

Each year on August 14, National Navajo Code Talkers Day honors the contributions of the Native Americans who brought their unique abilities to the World War II effort. The day also highlights their impact on U.S. code and the Native American language that made it possible. While code talkers were instrumental during World War II, the United States military had used the Native American language in their coded messages before.

August is Purple Heart Month

Purple Heart Month honors the brave men and women who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in the U.S. military. Purple Heart Day falls on August 7th, commemorating the day in 1782 when General George Washington established the "Badge of Military Merit," the precursor to the Purple Heart.

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) was founded in 1920 by former Cincinnati Judge Robert S. Marx and a group of World War I veterans. The DAV was formed to address the need for medical care, benefits, and support for disabled veterans returning from the war, recognizing that the nation was ill-equipped to handle the influx of injured and ill veterans.
